Barry Walton is currently employed with Bell Aliant, which is the 3rd largest ILEC in Canada. Barry's role is the Senior Advisor for the access design and builds strategy for the FTTH program that is currently in the 3rd year of a 600k premises passed build in Atlantic Canada.
He has just completed 33 years of service working in 23 various roles, the majority in access outside plant. Barry's career has spanned many roles; starting as a field technician in 1977 and working through various other craft roles. He has worked in a staff support role for a number of years, and in 1996 took on a role as a business analyst on a large HFC build. Barry spent 2 years, since 2007, as regional manager for Outside Plant Engineering. Barry has held several roles with deploying FTTH at Bell Aliant, co-authored their business case, led the implementation plan for rolling out FTTH and has lead many initiatives to increase Bell Aliant's build velocity and reduce overall costs.
Barry has presented a White paper at the FTTH council conference and has participated on 2 panel discussions. He has served on the technology committee for the past 2 years and at the 2011 Conference assisted with setting up the Fibrezone. For the last 2 years Barry has chaired a working committee with many of the ILECS in Canada on FTTH. Outside of work he is an avid boater, snowmobiler and a well seasoned cabinet maker. At Bell Aliant, Barry has the unofficial title as the "Godfather of FTTH".
