How fast are next-generation networks going to get? And how soon? And what role is Smart Grid technology going to play in taking North America into a new era of almost unlimited bandwidth?
The FCC’s National Broadband Plan, picking up on the FTTH Council’s vision of a 100 Megabit Nation, has set a goal of 100 Mbps symmetrical service to the vast majority of American homes by 2020. But now one FTTH Council member, the public electric utility EPB, is offering gigabit Internet service over its all-fiber network to customers in Chattanooga, Tennessee. So just where is this all going?
The Utilities Telecom Council (UTC) recently released a landmark study showing that utilities on their own will not be able to build all the communications networks they need to make Smart Grid happen, and that best of breed communications service providers will be essential to their success.
Join the FTTH for another in its series of “hot topic” workshops aimed at improving industry awareness of the latest technology, policy and business developments related to FTTH. On December 8, we’ll be in Phoenix for a look at “The Future of Video, Telco’s and Smart Grid: Going for the Gigabit,” a full day of presentations and panel discussions aimed at connecting all the dots related to Smart Grid and telecommunications services – and exploring the opportunities that may exist not only for electric utility companies, but also for telecom service providers whose direct involvement in these projects could be key to fulfilling the promise of Smart Grid systems.
The day’s sessions will include a special focus on how Smart Grid technologies fit into the National Broadband Plan (NBP), as well as a look at the utilities that are deploying all-fiber Smart Grid and what kinds of services they are providing over them. We’ll also have a session on the latest trends in video services over all-fiber networks, and we plan to focus on community broadband and, in particular, the municipalities and local organizations that have applied to participate in Google’s gigabit FTTH project. The FTTH Council’s Washington counsel Tom Cohen will conduct a session on the legislative and regulatory outlook, and he’ll update us on the NBP, USF/CAF and the latest from the network management and “net neutrality” front. And, as with every regional workshop we do, we’ll have a number of FTTH deployers come in and give us their best practices and lessons learned.
In recent years our regional workshops have been drawing up to 200 participants, and they are recognized as excellent opportunities to learn and to make contacts with industry colleagues who are service providers, consulting engineers, and manufacturers of FTTH products. We hope to see you there!
