Broadband service speeds to bridge digital divide in southeastern Columbus

Households and businesses in southeastern Columbus County now have access to something many never thought possible: high-speed broadband Internet service via a fiber optic network. Atlantic Telephone Membership Cooperative (ATMC) announced recently that the company completed mainline construction of its project to bring high-speed Internet to southeastern Columbus County a year ahead of schedule. The 250-mile stretch of mainline took just 14 months to install and officials say more than 1,000 customers are already enjoying the service.

ATMC Completes Mainline Network Construction of Broadband Stimulus Project in Columbus County One Year Ahead of Schedule

Shallotte, NC – Allen Russ, CEO/General Manager of ATMC, announced today that the company has completed mainline construction of its project to bring high-speed Internet to southeastern Columbus County one year ahead of schedule. Project construction, which was initially estimated to take up to two and a half years to complete, began on February 28, 2011. However, a mild winter and an aggressive work schedule allowed the 250 miles of mainline fiber optic network to be installed in only 14 months.
